François Lindemann Nu-Bass 6tet
Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, pianist and composer François Lindemann is a citizen of the world who has toured and recorded with Daniel Humair, Carla Bley, Curtis Fuller, Steve Swallow and Woody Shaw among others.
He has been organizing his own orchestras and projects for almost 40 years, passionate about inter-ethnic musical experiences with traditional artists from South-East Asia in particular. Piano Seven, initiated in 1986, represents the insane musical and technical challenge of producing an orchestra of seven grand pianos on the same stage for international tours that will take him as far as Brazil or Singapore.
The Nu-Bass 6tet that we heard at Club Chorus in November 2022 is a recent project (1). François Lindemann has wanted to write music for two double basses for a long time, in the continuity of some John Coltrane recordings such as Olé and Ascension or Andrew Hill’s Smokestack. He liked the sound textures, but wanted to go further by entrusting each double bass with different written parts, played simultaneously. The presence of an oud enriches the compositions with oriental colors (2).
