Shai Maestro, Erik Truffaz
Need we introduce pianist Shai Maestro? In 2006, at the age of 19, he joined the fiery trio of double bassist Avishai Cohen. Together, they have toured the world's leading jazz venues. A few years later, he set up his own projects, often in small groups, in trio, 4tet or solo. His style combines an acute knowledge of classical music technique with the fluid, looped repetitive figures of jazz, all wrapped up in romantic melodies.
Winner of the Grand Prix Suisse de Musique in 2023, trumpeter Erik Truffaz has fascinated audiences for some thirty years with his ability to renew himself. His latest project is a retranscription of Ennio Morricone's magnificent film scores. Since then, his albums Rollin' and Clap have been released on the Blue Note label.
Although their paths have often crossed, Shai Maestro and Erik Truffaz have never performed together on stage. A duo concert was scheduled for November 2021 in Vevey, Switzerland, on the initiative of the Cully Jazz festival, but had to be canceled at the last minute due to travel restrictions linked to the Covid 22 measures. The Thelonica association offers a series of jazz and improvised music concerts at dawn each summer in Lausanne on the jetty facing Lake Geneva. The first concert scheduled for 2023 was Shai Maestro's piano solo. But the day before, Erik Truffaz had performed in the region, and joined Shai on the jetty for their first surprise duet full of complicity and emotion.
