Gato Barbieri style has a Latin touch - warm, hoarse, caliente, immediately recognizable

Gato Barbieri

Gato Barbieri arrived in Paris to develop a crossbreeding of Latin American music with jazz. Coming from Argentina, Gato Barbieri joined Don Cherry's orchestra, then created his own band and toured in Europe before returning to work in Latin America.

Gato Barbieri is known to the public for being the composer and performer of the music for the film Last Tango In Paris (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1972).

We find Gato Barbieri performing in 1980 for his 3rd appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, with his 6tet featuring Pretty Purdy on drums, Edward Martinez on keyboards, Bill Washer on guitar, Lincoln Goines on bass and Skip Howlett on percussion.
