Vieux Farka Toure

The second son of the legendary Malian musician Ali Farka Touré (see below), Vieux Farka Touré decided as a teenager to become a musician. It wasn't an easy question in this Tuareg warrior tribe. Even his father disapproved of the choice, having experienced the difficulties and pressures of being a musician.

In the end, the matter was settled, and Vieux Farka Touré was even able to record some tracks from his first album with his father in 2005, shortly before the latter's death. Since then, a series of albums and world tours have allowed Vieux to assert himself musically. His latest album, simply called Ali, allowed him to reinterpret eight of his father's compositions. One of the albums of the year - absolutely wonderful music, for Elton John.

Ali Farka Touré, a musical road trip with Ry Cooder

Let's talk about slide guitarist Ry Cooder's crossover musical life. In the 1960s, he shared his passion for African-American blues with the Rolling Stones (1). In the 1980s, he recorded the unforgettable soundtrack to Wim Wenders' film Paris Texas. In the 1990s, he recorded the Afro-Cuban son by forming the group Buena Vista Social Club on that great Caribbean island censored for American citizens. And he traveled to Africa to record the desert blues in the Sahara with Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré. It was this unwavering commitment that made forgotten music world-famous. Music that was previously known only to specialists (2).

(1) Ry Cooder played the slide guitar part of Sister Morphine on the Sticky Fingers record.

(2) In 2024, Rolling Stone ranked Ry Cooder in 66th place and Ali Farka Touré at the 104th place of the 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
