Live at the MIGS - Montreux Guitar Show

Alexandr Misko

In 2015, we could read in a short online article on lematin.ch: «With a shy teenager's haircut, the 17-year-old guitar prodigy Alexander Misko films himself in his bedroom, concentrating on his playing. But as soon as playing starts, the magic begins». Two years later, still in the bedroom, his fingerstyle guitar covers of Careless Whisper and Billie Jean were viewed tens of millions of times.

Today, Alexandr Misko, no longer a teenager, has settled in Germany, after being expelled from his homeland by the turmoil of its president-for-life. And he tours the world with a guitar that has been completely redesigned for a new kind of intergalactic sound system.

We find Alexandr Misko performing at a special Fingerstyle Night at the MIGS 2024 - Montreux Guitar Show, the same night as his mentor Jon Gomm. But how better to describe his music than by himself?

So much more than just guitar

«Why to play alone on stage? It just happened! When I started out, I didn't have anyone to share my passion for music with. So I just couldn't start a band or a duo or anything like that. Later I realized that I didn't need to be in a band to express myself musically. It turned out that one guitar was enough to make myself and my audience happy. Although I love playing in duos - I have separate projects with a bass player, a harp player, and of course it's always a great pleasure to share a stage with other fingerstyle people!

For me, fingerstyle guitar is just a huge range of techniques, both old and new, both traditional and experimental. Everything you can do with a guitar, and maybe something no one has ever done before - all to create modern guitar music of any kind, in any genre, breaking all the rules if you have to. It is about creativity, innovation and joy. But it is also supported by strong musical foundations created and explored by older generations of players - Michael Edges, Preston Reed, Jon Gomm, Adrian Legg, Thomas Leeb, Don Ross, Andy McKee, William Ackerman, Alex De Grassi and others.

Well, as a younger person you take their experience, get inspired by their art, learn from it and then take it to a new level. I'm humbled and happy to be a part of this fingerstyle community that means so much more than just guitar.»
